While it is on the one hand a space adventure story about a young man fulfilling his potential, it is also a weird, hallucinatory drug novel full of interior monologues on space religion, planetary ecology, esoteric galactic court intrigue, and the lifecycle of giant worms.

-John Hodgman, on Dune.

Mr. Hodgman’s original post, available here, has some fun things to say about writing and adapting literature, which you might read. My own reading of it was full of “indeed, sir!”s and “objection!”s, which is always a good time. Alternatively, you might have a look at Saga, which is the purpose of his full post.

And now for some lifecycle biology, to follow up thoughts of Dune.

We have a database of nerds, malingerers, autists, and data-keepers…And aggressive hipsters. And cold-breweed coffee enthusiasts. I love them all, and when the feces comes down and the total super-apocalypse occurs, I welcome them all to be on my island. I will make them dress as half animals to be my servants to reenact Island of Lost Souls.

-John Hodgman

What a generous offer. I accept.
